Amelia Earhart’s 115th Birthday Google Doodle (VIDEO)

July 24, 2012 would’ve been the 115th birthday of Amelia Earhart, who was famous for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Google is commemorating the day with  an aviation-themed Google Doodle, which depicts the pilot boarding her plane.

In 1937, after gaining media and government attention for successfully completing a few landmark flights, Earheart embarked on an adventure to the be the first woman to fly around the world. It was a journey which wouldn’t see her return.

While she and her navigator Fred Noonan completed the majority of their 29,000 mile trip, somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, the crew definitively lost contact with radio operators, officially opening one of the greatest mysteries in American history.

A privately-funded, $2.2 million search effort was launched this summer in hopes of finding the remains of the wreckage, but the search came back without any conclusive evidence.
