There was plenty of time on Saturday Night Live this weekend for Nicki Minaj to perform three songs and do imitations of Beyonce and Kim Kardashian, but not enough to air this sketch on how morning shows are trying to deal with the political and cultural unrest over recent verdicts in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City.

In the sketch, Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson play morning show anchors, a la Matt Lauer and Natalie Morales on Today. Of course, they’re on a morning show in St. Louis, just after a weekend of fire and unrest and Ferguson. It just doesn’t seem right to do an episode of Rise & Smile under those conditions.

The sketch is clever and has some of its funniest moments when they throw it over to the traffic reporter, played by Leslie Jones. Less successful are the attempts to use awkward verbal reminders of the Darren Wilson case in Ferguson, with Chef Darryl Ferguson, played by host James Franco, having to deliver most of the lines.

What do you think? Was the sketch just cut because they ran out of time or do you think the producers were worried about backlash? (Adding to the “Cut For Time” argument is the fact that the sketch does appear now on Saturday Night Live‘s own YouTube channel.)
