While raving about Lady Gaga’s voice during her Oscar tribute to The Sound of Music, Kristi Capel, a news anchor for a Fox affiliate in Cleveland, said it was hard to hear Gaga’s voice because of all the “jigaboo music” behind her. She repeated the word again, clearly unaware of its racial connotations.

Let’s go to the dictionary, shall we?

noun, plural jigaboos. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive.

    1. a contemptuous term used to refer to a black person.

So, yeah, basically a sillier sounding n-word. It comes from a mixture of the word “jig” (meaning a kind of dance) and “Bugaboo” (meaning “a persistent problem or source of annoyance.”) Yikes.

Capel later apologized to those calling her out on Twitter:

Well, she sure knows it’s a word now. For further reference, she is welcome to check out any number of classic tunes from The Pharcyde:
