  • It’s always a shame when a clever internet meme gets really popular, and then it starts to get annoying, and then there’s an internet backlash against the meme that becomes even more annoying.

On Facebook the last few weeks, you might have noticed a joke about a stick figure guy named Bill, who does the opposite of annoying things people do on Facebook – like posting constant selfies when they go to the gym, for example, or getting into dumb arguments over offensive things.

  • Be like bill 2
  • The original cartoons were created by Eugeniu Croitoru, a Moldovan man who lives in Italy, and they became so popular that the Be Like Bill Facebook page now has 1.4 million fans people all over the world started making their own versions. Croitoru told the BBC:

”Bill is much better than me. The idea is very simple. ‘Bill’ can be anyone who is smart and has common sense and doesn’t do annoying things. You’ll also notice Bill can be someone who makes fun of himself and jokes about others too occasionally.”

The concept was really entertaining, until Croitoru went a bit overboard and started posting them once an hour and making really obscure references aimed at niche audiences. Nobody likes being spammed with lectures OR feeling like they’re not in on the joke, dude.

Now, though, people have formed entire Facebook pages trying to knock him down a peg, making parody memes calling him arrogant and attention-seeking.

Can’t we have one funny viral joke that doesn’t become a silly internet fight? Hey, somebody should make a meme about that.
