  • YouTube is launching their monthly Red subscription service, kicking off the launch with several series including “Scare PewDiePie!”

The service would cost users $9.99 per month and offer ad-free video watching plus premium content inaccessible to non-subscribers.

  • Red will offer other perks such as offline play for videos, and the ability to play videos in the background even if other applications are in the foreground. This might come in handy for music listeners, who use YouTube to stream their favorite songs (but for some reason don’t use GooglePlay or YouTube Music Key).

The launch didn’t come without controversy though. Tech Crunch reported YouTube partners were threatened with having their videos hidden from view if they didn’t opt in to YouTube Red, significantly cutting into creators profit margins and effectively forcing them to sign with the service.

Details on the situation remain scant, and unconfirmed by the video giant. In the meantime, we can consume the amazing content they already have on hand.
