  • Finally, a news story about a child and a gun that doesn’t involve him accidentally shooting himself.

Eleven-year-old Chris Gaither from Talladega, Alabama is in the news today, not just because he took out a home intruder with a nine-millimeter handgun, but because he managed to deal a final insult to the culprit on the local news.

The home-school student was alone in his house on Wednesday morning when he heard a noise — a burglar had broken in and was trying to steal a hamper full of stuff.

As is custom in Alabama, Chris grabbed a gun to defend himself.

Fortunately his father takes him out for target practice all the time, so he actually knew how to use the gun and didn’t hurt himself — but the burglar didn’t take him seriously.

“When I pulled the gun, I guess he didn’t think it was a real gun because he kept on walking,” he told local news station WVTM 13.

But once the burglar was outside, Chris started shooting and the intruder was hit in the leg just before he jumped the fence.

“It was a full metal jacket bullet,” Chris explained, looking mighty pleased with himself. “It went straight through the back of his leg. He started crying like a little baby.”

Ouch, dude. Leave the guy a scrap of dignity, will ya?

Chris’s mother said the intruder had robbed their house before, but they didn’t know him personally.

“I hope you learn your lesson coming to this house trying to steal stuff,” Chris added.
