  • Folks, a picture is worth 1,000 words — but what is an emoji worth? Well, for one Israeli couple it was worth a whopping $2,200 after a misunderstood message was sent to their landlord with a string of emojis that made this poor emoji reading landlord think the couple was getting ready to rent their home. However, this was not the case! The couple didn’t want the home, but lo and behold the landlord took it off the market after not being able to ignore the overwhelming positivity in the following text — translated from Hebrew —

  • The landlord read that message as “we are buying the house”, ignoring the “we need to discuss the details”. The couple ghosted shortly after the text — why did he think a squirrel was a sign of anything? Buddy, that’s on you! The judge however ruled completely in the favor of the landlord, saying that –

“The [emoji laden] text message sent by Defendant 2 on June 5, 2016, was accompanied by quite a few symbols, as mentioned. These included a ‘smiley’, a bottle of champagne, dancing figures and more. These icons convey great optimism. Although this message did not constitute a binding contract between the parties, this message naturally led to the Plaintiff’s great reliance on the defendants’ desire to rent his apartment.”

Man oh man — optimism! The judge has no idea! The smiley could be a jaundiced face, the champagne bottle could be a sign of a drinking problem — judge, you don’t know, man! You don’t know!
