One year ago, on July 23, 2011, 9-year-old Rachel Beckwith was killed in a tragic car accident near Seattle, Washington.
About a month before her death, Rachel became inspired by the efforts of charity: water to bring clean water to people throughout the world. With the help of her mom, she created a fundraising page on mycharitywater.org. Instead of presents for her ninth birthday, Rachel wanted family and friends to donate $9 for children in need.
While Rachel only managed to raise $220 out of her $300 goal, it was a strong start, and she vowed to try harder next year.
After Rachel passed away, thousands of people all around the world responded to her story, collectively raising over $1.2 million in her honor, with 100% of the funds going directly to Tigray, Ethiopia.
On the anniversary of Rachel’s death, Rachel’s mom, Samantha, and her grandparents, Richard and Roseanne, joined charity: water in visiting Ethiopia and seeing firsthand the 60,000 people that Rachel helped.
