  • Inspired by the massive wave of YouTube covers, remixes and reimaginings of his song “Somebody That I Used to Know,” singer-songwriter Gotye created this mash-up weaving some of the finer examples together. (He also cites Kutiman’s classic “Thru You” project as a key inspiration.) According to the man himself (whose real name is Wouter “Wally” De Backer), “I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered.”

In a nod to the crowdsourced nature of the project, Gotye has retitled this new version of his hit “Somebodies.”

  • The video features only sounds featured in the original video, with no additions by Gotye after the fact. He also avoided any published remixes of the song or performances from reality TV. See Gotye’s official blog for a complete list of videos used in the project.

Within hours of being uploaded to YouTube, the video received thousands of likes and shares.
