Ed sheeran released the new single, “Sing” on ITunes yesterday and it veers away from his usual earnest crooner feel. The influence of Pharrell Williams on it is obvious and it reminds me more of Sheeran’s “You Need Me” days.

There’s probably 40% more falsetto than I was expecting and the beat is more akin to a Pherrell song than Sheeran’s most recent material, but I’m not complaining. I think was about time to hear his sweet rap skills come back, and this was a fun, catchy way to do it. To me, this is one of those songs that catches you off guard because it’s not what you are expecting, so you have to listen to it again, then you’re hooked. Needless to say, I’ve listened to it probably 10 times since I discovered it this morning, so I’d say I’m into it. This makes me very excited to hear what the rest of Sheeran’s album, “X” will have for us. I’m hoping it features a few more like this that are upbeat alongside some classic Ed Sheeran style that will melt my heart.
