  • Here’s our (hopefully!) final rundown of the Nicki / Taylor Twitter drama.

The reason “Anaconda” shot up to the top of the Twitter trends earlier this week is that Nicki Minaj was upset that her provocative music video was not nominated for “Video of the Year” at the 2015 Video Music Awards. When it premiered, the “Anaconda” video broke records on Vemo and was seen by many of Nicki’s fans as a celebration of black women’s bodies and sexuality.

On Twitter, Nicki claimed the video wasn’t nominated because she isn’t a skinny white girl – and Taylor Swift, a skinny white girl who was nominated for the “Bad Blood” video, took this as a veiled attack at her personally and decided to respond.

Look, I love Taylor and I’m so happy she’s embracing feminism and trying to be a positive role model for girls, I really mean it. But a pretty blonde white girl barging into a conversation about racial issues in the entertainment industry is just never ever EVER a good idea.

Nicki quickly responded that she loves and supports Taylor too, but this isn’t about her. Nicki’s fans, of course, jumped all over Taylor for being self-centered.

Nicki has a valid point about the way black women are treated in the music industry and how pop culture tends to benefit skinny white women. (Although Tidal? Ehhhhh, that wasn’t the greatest business model.)

Taylor then responded with this, which … okay, she was trying to be nice and sweet and reach out to Nicki, but it wasn’t really the right move.
