Is Katy Perry Trying to Bury Taylor Swift with “Rise”?

Best. Pop star feud. EVER.

  • Rise
  • Katy Perry just dropped a new single and music video — and call me crazy, but I think this is more about vaulting herself ahead of Taylor Swift than it is about empowering people and celebrating the Olympics.

Please humor me and my conspiracy theories, I’ve been watching a lot of “Game of Thrones” lately.

  • So yesterday Katy released her latest song “Rise” ahead of her upcoming album, her first new release since 2013, and she’s spinning it as an anthem for the Olympics that she will likely be performing at the opening ceremony. The video features footage of inspiring Olympic athletes like Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and Simone Biles. I’ll be honest, I got chills a couple of times.

Of course, this also comes right on the heels of the drama between Taylor Swift, noted Katy Perry nemesis, and her angry ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris, who went on a big ol’ Twitter rant because People magazine revealed that Taylor wrote Harris and Rihanna’s hit song “This Is What You Came For” under a pseudonym.

“I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC,” he said, “but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”

There was no way Katy could resist that kind of bait, which she pounced on with an admittedly clever Hillary Clinton GIF and a retweet of a previous subtweet, “Time, the ultimate truth teller.”

  • And now ALL OF A SUDDEN we have this new anthem that’s all about rising above pettiness and conflict to unite humanity and achieve victory despite the people who want to tear her down.

    Just check out the lyrics:

When, when the fire’s at my feet again / And the vultures all start circling / They’re whispering, “You’re out of time” / But still I rise.

Are these “vultures” really referring to the inner doubts of Simone Biles as she strives for Olympic gold, or are they the critics who dismissed Katy and declared Taylor the queen of pop music?

That Hillary Clinton GIF was no accident, either. Vocativ deputy editor Erin Gloria Ryan, formerly of Jezebel and VH1, theorizes that Katy Perry aligning herself with the Clinton campaign early on “was a masterful act of anti-Taylor Swift gamesmanship”:

  • “Because with Katy in the Hillary camp,” she continues, “Taylor couldn’t exactly squad up without looking sub-Perry in the hierarchy. In this way, Katy made a massively ballsy chess game-type move designed to eventually ‘mate Taylor. If Hillary wins, it’s Katy, not Taylor, at the inaugural ball. This pop star feud is the best of all time.”

If everything plays out the way I’m convinced Katy wants it to, she’s going to be the pop star figurehead of two of the hugest media events of the year, the Olympics and the presidential election, while Taylor is busy organizing lovey-dovey photoshoots with Tom Hiddleston or whatever the hell she’s doing.

I wouldn’t count Taylor Swift out just yet, though. As silly as she’s being right now, I’d never bet against Tay in a head-to-head media manipulation battle. What exactly does she have up her sleeve?
