  • Frank Ocean is one of the most popular and beloved musicians in the world. His landmark 2012 album, channel ORANGE, was nominated for three Grammys, including Album of the Year, winning for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It was named the best album of the year by Metacritic, the Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop poll, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, and more. (It’s also, by a good margin, the most listened to album in my own iTunes library.) Since then, he’s been incredibly scarce, not even appearing in music videos for songs in which he has a verse.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that Ocean’s long-anticipated followup album, tentatively titled Boys Don’t Cry, would be released today. This was seemingly confirmed by an enigmatic live video stream on his website last night, which thousands of thirsty fans (including yours truly) watched for hours in advance of the Friday 12 AM ET Apple Music refresh.

On the stream, a man (apparently Ocean, though this hasn’t been confirmed) spray-painted and arranged boxes for a couple of hours. As midnight ET approached, snippets of synth music played in the background, hyping commenters on Twitter and Reddit up beyond all hype. And then, midnight came… and… nothing.

We literally f*cking watched paint dry. For no reason. No album dropped.

Though the album might still come out soon, last night’s enormous tease inspired thousands to tweet their rage and disappointment — mostly in meme form. Here are a few of our favorite tweets and images reacting to the latest Frank Ocean album delay:
