On June 22, Extremist Islamic sect, Boko Haram, abducted 68 girls, women from their villages. On Friday, 63 made a daring escape from their captors, according to MSN News.

The escapees and their families were taken to the hospital in Lassa, a town in northern Nigeria. They will be returning to their now burnt villages, where their homes are destroyed.

Despite the increase in kidnappings and killings (2,000 people have died this year compared to an estimated 3,600 in the previous four years) by Boko Haram (which translates to “western education is a sin”), Nigeria’s Federal Government has been failing to provide adequate security for its civilians. The president, Goodluck Jonathan, has also refused the terms of exchange given by Boko Haram to release its fighters in exchange for the 219 girls (of the 276 abducted on April 15) who remain in captivity.

Taking matters into their own hands, security is now mainly provided by local vigilante and police. Soldiers have been said to have abandoned their posts, as others stand idly by.
