When I hear about a school shooting — which, I don’t really even have to say, happens all to frequently — the first thing that goes through my mind is, “I hope everyone is okay.”

The second thing that goes through my mind, selfishly, is, “What if it happens to me? How would I survive this situation?” In those tense moments, would my adrenaline kick in? Would I have my wits about me enough to get under a table or lock myself in a restroom? Would I try to help save others or would I be a coward?

Fortunately, most of us will never have to experience such a thing. Jessica Davis‘ cell phone video from inside Strozier Library at Florida State University, where a gunman opened fire on Wednesday night, reveals the reactions of students holed up in the library, not knowing where the shooter is, getting instructions over a loudspeaker, huddled together because what else can you do?

We’re lucky this time around that only three people were injured, and hopefully the two that are currently hospitalized make full recoveries. It’s hard to believe that anything involving a school shooting could be “lucky,” but sometimes weird things happen.
