  • Everyone is eager to help when whales or dolphins wash up on a beach, but a Great White Shark? That’s a somewhat less cute problem to deal with.

This juvenile shark got stuck while trying to grab seagulls off the beach near Chatham, Massachusetts. Concerned beach-goers found it but had to keep their distance at first as the animal thrashed and snapped at the air.

“I was a little afraid,” said Isabelle Hegland, “but I could tell it wasn’t moving anytime soon because the shore was going way out, it was approaching towards low tide so it was becoming increasingly difficult for the shark to keep its gills wet and be able to breathe.”

Several people dumped buckets of water over its gills, which kept it alive long enough for shark expert Greg Skomal to arrive. He attached a rope to the shark’s tail, hooked it to a boat and dragged it back into the water, where they were able to revive it and let it go.

Not the cuddliest animal rescue ever, but still a good story about people rallying to protect an important part of the ecosystem.
