  • People of the internet, rejoice – Jeremy Meeks aka “the Hot Felon” has been released from prison.

You probably remember that chiseled face from the mugshot that went viral in 2014. Meeks was arrested on felony weapons charges and the Stockton Police Department posted his picture to their Facebook page, sparking a “Mugshot McDreamy” meme and speculation that he could go into modeling when his two-year prison sentence was over.

Now that time has come – Meeks posted both to his Instagram page and the page of a modeling agency that he’s “overwhelmed and grateful for what lies ahead,” and “I want to thank my family and everybody for all your love, support and prayers.”

So it’s straight to model superstardom for him, right? Actually, Mic.com points out that the future might not be so bright for the 32-year-old father of three.

He has plenty of reasons to be overwhelmed. Every year, more than 600,000 people find themselves in Meeks’ shoes. They’re released from state and federal prisons and enter a job market that’s notoriously hostile to people with criminal records. One national survey conducted by the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in California found that more than 60% of formerly incarcerated people remain unemployed after their release, and 76% rated their experience of finding work “very difficult or nearly impossible.”

We certainly hope things work out for Meeks and he gets his life back on track.
