  • Apparently, people are taking this #SaveTwitter thing pretty seriously and really believe the social media network is going to shut down next year.

Well guess what? The hashtag originally started with the Twitter crash on Tuesday and was used to complain about services that had gone out such as follower counts and retweets. According to Mashable, the hashtag morphed into a joke about Marina Joyce (a YouTube creator who the internet thought was being abused and held captive) and from there became a conspiracy theory about the site shutting down in 2017.

The shutdown rumor was started by a user who may or may not be BradTheLadLong, self-stylized as “Most Controversial YouTuber of 2015,” who claimed he was shutting down Twitter due to the abuse he’s suffered on the site.

  • Either way, the hashtag took off. Some believed the idea that it was being shut down due to bullying:

  • Fear not, Twitter is not shutting down for any foreseeable time. You never really can believe what you read on the internet after all.
