Just to reiterate, we definitely don't live in a post-racial society. If you need more proof, re-read what happened to Leslie Jones on Twitter.
The Black Lives Matter movement is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life. The East Tennessee State University chapter of the organization held a protest this week, and a student actually showed up in an extremely inappropriate gorilla mask. Below is a news report from Tennessee local news station WJHL:
The student responsible for this atrocity is Tristan Rettke, an ETSU freshman studying public safety. Rettke has been criminally charged with one count of civil rights intimidation. In Tennessee, civil rights intimidation is either a low-grade felony or a misdemeanor depending on the situation. According to Jezebel, it is also illegal to wear a “mask or disguise” as part of an effort to keep others from exercising their civil rights, an aspect of the law likely put into place because of the Ku Klux Klan.
According to the Johnson City Press, President of ETSU Brian Noland called Rettke’s actions “incomprehensible, intolerable and impermissible,” and students and faculty held a “community dialogue” that night to talk about the idiot in the gorilla mask. Rettke has been suspended, according to ETSU, and besides facing criminal charges will be subject to an internal student-conduct investigation. As of today, he was released on a $10,000 bail from Washington County Detention Center.
