The president has for the longest time been providing us with dog whistles towards his approval of white supremacist groups — such as him omitting Jews from the Holocaust Rememberance Day Speech and other questionable statements — but this time he actually seems to have given us his loudest whistle yet by stating that there are many fine people in the Charlottesville riots, connecting to their cause, the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee who Trump compared to George Washington (the latter was the first president of our country, the former was a confederate traitor who tried to keep slavery in our nation) and said the alt right has a lot of fine people in it. Additionally, the president blamed the “alt left” as he called it (and what that means no one can actually point out), saying “What about the alt-left that came charging at, as you say, the alt-right? Do they have any semblance of guilt? How about the fact that they came charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have a problem? I think they do.” So the president has thrown his lot seemingly in with the nazis who rioted in Charlottesville by not denouncing them— and in fact seemingly trying to denounce both sides. He also said the mother of the woman killed in the riot praised him, so it’s a hell of a shit show, the whole thing. You can watch it above, but you know what? Ugh.
