Los Angeles Replaces Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day

Columbus Day has become a controversial holiday as of late. While at a certain time Americans were comfortable celebrating Columbus Day, and hey, many still are, in recent times the holiday meant to represent something much worse — the invasion of Europeans into North America that ended up in the genocide of the Native American people. The Los Angeles council voted 12-1 to make this happen, with the lone hold out vote asking to make August 9th Indigenous People’s Day and turn Columbus Day into a day celebrating Los Angeles’ many diverse cultures.

Columbus Day remains a Federal Holiday and one of the few government recognized holidays that give employees a day off from work. Arnold Schwarzenegger got rid of Columbus Day in 2009 in Los Angeles as part of a cost cutting measure so all of this has been a slow movement to this. Indigenous Peoples Day begins officially in 2019.
