Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have left their mansion, in the words of Page Six in the New York Post, ‘unscathed’ for the fire, after hiring private firefighters to save their home and neighborhood from the fires that have devastated great parts of California. The Hidden Hills community in which the couple lives with their three children has praised the pair for their work protecting the neighborhood.

Kim Kardashian has posted Instagrams of the fires which are devastating the area, writing – “Pray for Calabasas. Just landed back home home and had 1 hour to pack & evacuate our home. I pray everyone is safe”.

The California fires have so far, according to the New York Times, displaced hundreds of thousands of people, destroyed thousands of homes and resulted in the deaths of 44 people. If you are interested in helping those affected by the ravaging fires, you can donate to The American Red Cross, The California Wildlife Relief Fund, The California Fire Foundation, Caring Choices, which organizes volunteers for the fire, and the Enloe Medical Center which is currently housing displaced families. You can find more charities at this New York Times link.

The hiring of private firefighters by Kim and Kanye however has also raised worrying questions about what the global warming afflicted future will look like.

It is wonderful that Kim and Kanye managed to save their neighborhood, but this does not bode well for economic disparity in the future. This is a symptom of late capitalism as those who have a lot of money really can live in a completely different reality than the rest of the world. And we can’t begrudge Kim and Kanye hiring private firefighters to save their home, but it really does paint a dire picture of what the economic differences will be like when global warming’s effects inevitably, grow even worse. Where the rich can save themselves as the poor and middle class have to deal with near constant storms.
