#FreedomforKesha: Fans Call for Justice in Kesha vs Dr. Luke Case

We don’t hear much about Kesha anymore.

Not because she’s faded out of cultural relevancy or lost her devoted, glitter-fied fanbase. But because she dared accuse her producer, the successful — and powerful — Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, of a decade-long history of physical and verbal assault.

And now she says her career may soon be over unless the courts support an injunction that would allow her to sign with another label without Dr. Luke or his Kemosabe Records interfering.

The legalities of the situation have prohibited Kesha from releasing new music for the past two years, and limited her concerts to this year’s LA Pride and occasional guest appearances in other artists’ local underground shows.

Or rather, she could continue to release music and build her brand and career — IF she agreed to continuing working directly with and under the authority of the man she says raped and abused her.

Outraged fans took to Twitter this week to show their support with the hashtag #FreedomforKesha, raising awareness of what Kesha has accused Dr. Luke of and how it’s impacting her career and general well-being.

In a time where our society is as vocal as ever about the issues surrounding sexism, rape culture, and victim blaming, what’s happening to Kesha serves as a fairly standard, and infuriating, cautionary tale about what happens when a woman comes forward and accuses a man in a position of power of misconduct.

Dr. Luke’s representatives, in the meantime, claim that “if Kesha now regrets her career being mired in legal proceedings, it’s entirely her making. It was Kesha who chose to file a lawsuit falsely alleging abuse to gain advantage in contract negotiations, and now she must accept the consequences of her improper actions.”
