Oh man, I’m gonna have some opinions about this.

The trailer for “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” a spoof of Jane Austen’s beloved novel, has finally arrived – and I have to say it does look pretty funny. Starring Lily James, Lena Heady, Matt Smith and Sam Riley, the movie retells the classic story of the Regency-era romance between independent Elizabeth Bennet and proud, wealthy Mr. Darcy – only this time they have to fight hordes of zombies while they’re at it.

The movie is based off the novel of the same name by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith – meaning Grahame-Smith took the original classic novel and threw in a zombie apocalypse just for fun.

I read the book even though I’m terrified of zombies, because I love Jane Austen and I thought the concept sounded hilarious. Social commentary is a common theme between Austen’s novels and zombie stories, and there are so many potentially brilliant jokes you could make with this.

To be honest, though, the book felt kind of blah to me. It was less a clever mashup of wildly different genres and more “this book is boring, let’s throw in some zombies and fight scenes so dudes will want to read it.”

Still, the movie could pull it off. Since the book came out, “The Walking Dead” and Austen adaptations like “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Death Comes to Pemberley” have become immensely popular among the respective genres’ fanbases, so the filmmakers must know there’s a high bar to reach. And if nothing else, there will be beautiful locations, lavish costumes and super-gory special effects to keep us entertained.

So yeah, I’m going to watch it – and then I’m going to nitpick for like three weeks.
