Because every childhood film franchise we’ve ever loved is destined to become a mega-budget reboot with ridiculous special effects (‘sup, “Jurassic World”), there’s a new “Independence Day” movie coming out. It has even scarier aliens, it has even bigger spaceships, it even has Jeff Goldblum – but it doesn’t have Will Smith.

According to a viral site about “the War of 1996” launched by 20th Century Fox, Will Smith’s character was killed while he was testing out new technology the military was developing to defend Earth when the aliens inevitably returned – so he probably won’t even be around for a cameo appearance, unless they’re trying to pull some sneaky “where is Luke Skywalker” crap on us.

While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan.

I’m a bit wary of the whole thing. I remember the first “Independence Day” as a goofy summer blockbuster where Will Smith punched an alien in the face and we all got to laugh at how the aliens’ super-advanced technology was compatible with a Mac computer. I’m not sure I need another grim apocalypse that starts killing off beloved characters before it even hits theaters.

What do you think? Are you going to be watching this next summer?
