  • ”Rubber Duckie, it is a connection”, sings Ernie in the opening bars to the Sesame Street parody of Despacito — the song written by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, and arguably made super popular by Justin Bieber. The Sesame Street version — titled “El Patito”, or Rubber Duckie in Spanish, I am going to argue, is a beautiful masterpiece. We see Ernie and Sesame Street’s resident Spanish speaking monster, Rosa, singing about the beauty and friendship that a bunch of rubber molded into the shape of a cute little waterfowl can truly provide.

At first Ernie’s other very dear non rubber duckie friend Bert is annoyed to hear this song again, even parodied, but by the end he can’t help but hum the infectious rubber duckie in Spanish laden tune! Oh Bert! Your grumpiness isn’t impenetrable! Why, it truly never was! You beautiful fool! Sing, man, sing!
