  • It feels fitting that even after the death of its founder, Playboy continues to push forward the sexual revolution that Hugh Hefner was credited with helping jump start. In its latest issue Playboy introduces its first transgender playmate — French born model Ines Rau. Ines Rau has previously modeled in the Italian edition of Vogue.

The copy surrounding her photos — which can be read in the article above, the thing I famously read Playboy for — discusses her coming out and her realizing she is transgender, with her saying —

“I lived a long time without saying I was transgender… I dated a lot and almost forgot. I was scared of never finding a boyfriend and being seen as weird. Then I was like, You know, you should just be who you are. It’s a salvation to speak the truth about yourself, whether it’s your gender, sexuality, whatever. The people who reject you aren’t worth it. It’s not about being loved by others; it’s about loving yourself.”

It’s also meaningful that Playboy, which is often given credit for also jump starting a very toxic type of male sexuality, is spotlighting a trans woman. It’s nice and a sign that this magazine could just survive into the new era.
