Selena Quintanilla-Inspired TV Series Is Coming to ABC

ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a series inspired by Selena Quintanilla's legacy.

  • 2018 — Selena Quintanilla's star is shining brighter than ever.

A collaboration with MAC Cosmetics, a Google Doodle celebrating her life and legacy, a wax figure at Madame Tussauds, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — these are all things Quintanilla has managed to accomplish since her untimely death in 1995.

  • Now, with the approval and support of her family — Selena, or Selena's legacy rather, is headed to major television network, ABC. According to Variety, "ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a series inspired by the musical legacy of Selena Quintanilla."

  • "We [Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga and Abraham Quintanilla Jr.] are excited to come on board as producers on an ABC music driven, Latino family drama that celebrates Selena's musical legacy with a lead character whose music and career is inspired by Selena," says sister Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga.

The project — yet to be titled — is written and co-executive produced by Miguel Nolla who has worked on ABC shows like "Private Practice," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Scandal." Also on board the project is Scooter Braun — known for managing Justin Bieber — Scott Manson, and James Shin of SB Projects. In addition, Sergio Aguero, Jaime Davila, and Rico Martinez of Campanario Entertainment.

Of the project Braun says —

We are thrilled to team up with Campanario and ABC Studios and highlight the complexities and family dynamics of a Latin pop superstar coming to grips with the reality of her influence, especially in today's social climate. More importantly, we are proud to be collaborators on an incredibly timely show that focuses on a strong Latino family and represents the many Americans who we know will enjoy the series alongside us.

So, if the series is not about Selena exactly — what is it about?

The show will focus on Alex Guerra — a chart-topping, award-winning artist much like Selena. Having been estranged from her family for 5 years, Alex finds herself back in Texas when a crisis forces her to return home. There, audiences will see her attempt to juggle a love triangle, a demanding career, and dark family secrets.
