Although Carol Danvers have been around at least since the 70’s, her role as Captain Marvel was a relatively recent, and long overdue change. The transformation of Danvers from Ms. Marvel — a generic clad in black superhero with a lightning bolt on her body which Kamala Khan, another popular Marvel heroine, once politely described as “politically incorrect”, to Captain Marvel, the military ace pilot — was one that fans embraced wholeheartedly. SO much so that a movie version of the character became all but inevitable, and Entertainment Weekly just released the first ten official images from the Brie Larson starring movie, and for fans of comics and exciting movies about superheroes studying the ancient act of the big big punch, there were a few shockers amongst the pile.

Guardians of the Galaxy Villains Return

Because Captain Marvel is going to be a throwback, taking place in the Marvel Universe’s 90’s, we have the chance to see some characters who well, got killed off in the future. Lee Pace returns as the Guardians of the Galaxy villain Ronan the Accuser, but Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer is also there in the mix. The duo make up part of the Kree military strike team, Starforce. Considering Captain Marvel gets her powers from the Kree, look– we can piece some things together, alright?

Young, Two Eyed, Nick Fury

The flashback also covers the return of Nick Fury, Samuel L. Jackson’s character who we last saw in full in Captain America: Winter Soldier, and then in a cameo in Avengers: Infinity War. So this will be a return of sorts for the character. Samuel L. Jackson will be digitally aged down for the role, and, as you can plainly see, this is before the accident took his eye. In the Ultimate Comics line from which the Samuel L. Jackson Nick Fury hails, his eye was cut out by Wolverine before we meet him. Now, Marvel’s acquisition of Wolverine is up in the air, with Fox owning the rights, but Disney sort of owning Fox. We’ll see if we get an origin for his eyepatch here. Maybe he lovingly will take it and go “I don’t need this and never will, good bye sir”. We’ll see, I guess!

Monica Rambeau

Before Captain Marvel was Carol Danvers, in the comics she was Monica Rambeau. Since then Monica Rambeau has been mostly missing from the Marvel Universe, apart from a role in Warren Ellis’ profane “Nextwave”. Here, Monica Rambeau appears played by Lashana Lynch as a pilot with the call sign “Photon”. This is a reference to Monica Rambeau’s superhero persona after she retired the Captain Marvel name. Either way, the entire film is a cornucopia of deep dives and underrated characters. Including…

SKRULLS

The Skrulls are a shape shifting alien race that regularly threatens the Marvel Universe, and here they are led by the Ben Mendelsohn played Talos. As mysterious as the Skrull’s shape shifting powers however, just as mysterious is how they made it into a mainstream Marvel movie considering they’re part of the Fantastic Four universe owned by Fox. I’m sure we’ll hear about in due time, kind of like the deal between Marvel and Fox to use Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was in exchange for allowing the Deadpool movie to change Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s superpowers. Ah, deals! My favorite part of any vast cinematic achievement!
