  • What’s the first thing you think of when you see this post from the “History in Pictures” Facebook page? Maybe something like “Aw look, it’s Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio with his mom and dad when he was a baby, that’s so cute”?

  • Well, that’s the wrong reaction – you were supposed to think “EW OH MY GOD HIS MOM DIDN’T SHAVE HER ARMPITS THAT’S SO GROSS.”

Yes, internet – astonishingly enough, the woman who raised one of the most relentless environmental activists of all time was into the natural look in the 1970s.

The Facebook post from the beginning of March is currently sitting at 109,000 likes and more than 14,000 shares as people in the comments section continue to argue about why women should or shouldn’t shave their armpits.

“Hopefully after his oscar win can score himself a wee Gillette sponsorship and hook his mum up,” commented Sean Sutherland. “And for all you greeting wifes she should shave cause shes probs got more pit hair than his dad!! Thought women wanted equality, not to literally be as hairy as men.”

Fortunately, the reaction has swung back around to people declaring that women don’t have to shave if they don’t want to and you’re silly if you’re grossed out by the picture.

“It’s so funny I am part of a generation that wants to ‘free the nipple’, but freaks out when women have hair in their armpits,” Trisha Dowd remarked.

John Michael Bogle posted this popular response:

“Some women like to shave their armpit hair, and that’s cool. Others don’t and that’s cool, too. Some women like makeup and others don’t. It’s cool. Some women enjoy conforming to societal standards of fashion and beauty and others reject those standards in favor of styles more reflective of their personal tastes. It’s all cool.

What’s not cool is calling women horrible names because of their personal choices.

Say it with me assholes- ‘not my body, not my business.’”
