  • Niko Pueringer and Sam Gorski from Corridor Digital stop by the Samsung Blogger Lounge at SXSW 2013 to talk about creating visual effects from your own home, working with some of the biggest names in YouTube, building social media communities, and more.

Some may scoff at the idea, but these successful filmmakers believe that there is a recipe for creating that rare viral video.

“It’s all about taking that convention, that common experience that people have and putting your own twist on it,” Gorski says.

Pueringer cites the duo’s first viral piece – a modern warfare fan film that caught the attention of the Internet. “The unique twist we put on it was to make a cinematic, filmic piece about it with cool visual effects,” he says. “People aren’t going to share something unless it’s something that their friends and themselves are mutually interested in, and it’s something new that none of them have ever seen before.”

They also advise content creators to keep the content coming, especially if you’re looking to snag those YouTube subscribers. (Trust them. They have over 1.5 million subs.)

Regarding the new YouTube layout, Pueringer says, “If you’re already established, it’s much easier to gain more audience, but if you’re starting out it’s much harder to get that initial exposure.” Gorski adds, “They’re funding premium content and they really want to show off the content creators who are making the best looking stuff.”

Looking into the future, the duo is looking to release a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi series that they’ve been working on for a while. To stay on the cutting edge of the awesome content coming from their channel, subscribe to Corridor Digital on YouTube and follow them on Twitter.
