  • For the second year in a row, What’s Trending streamed live from the Samsung Hope For Children gala blue carpet, where we teamed up with Samsung to fulfill their commitment to causes that help children discover the wonder of life, learning, and our planet.

At the star-studded event, Shira Lazar talks with R&B icon John Legend about the work being done by his Show Me Campaign, providing education and resources for disadvantaged young people around the globe.

“We’re working with a lot of great partners that are ensuring that more and more kids have the opportunity to get a good education, both here in the States and overseas,” he says of the program. Specifically, “We have a girls scholarship program we started to help kids in Africa, girls in Africa, that want to go to secondary school but don’t have the opportunity to do so.”

He says of his charity work, “It’s important to me because I know how important education is. It’s an equalizer. It’s an opportunity to help yourself. But you need help to help yourself. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Legend also talks about the impact the Internet is having on the music industry, pointing to social media as the agent of change. “There are many more ways to access music. There’s many more ways to Interact with the fans,” he says. “You still have to have a great song and a great album and great concerts. That hasn’t changed. But there are just different techniques and different distribution methods to get to the fans.”

Finally, Legend chats with Shira about his recent interview with Oprah Winfrey for the OWN Network. Since Oprah filmed in his home, Legend admits that there was definitely a lot of clean-up and preparation beforehand. They even put his couch up on a platform to set up the lighting. “It was quite a lot of production to make us look natural on the couch there.”
