Having been a judge since season 1, Lakin says, “It’s really been such an incredible ride. I don’t think any of us knew what we were getting into the first season.”

For first-time watchers, Lakin says, “If you’ve seen ‘Project Runway,’ this is sort of like a filmmaker/YouTuber challenge for young, aspiring content creators.” She adds, “There’s nothing like that online or television really.”

The Brothers won last year and now they’re hosting and mentoring contestants. So, it’s fair to say that they know a bit about what it takes to become an online sensation.

Nick points to collaboration as a key method of building an audience. “Making a community and reaching out to people who are already making ripples in the space and already doing things that are bigger than you, reaching out to people like that, is invaluable.” He says. “And posting content consistently,” Chris adds.

As a judge, Lakin offers, “As YouTube continues to grow, what we’re seeing are people that are starting to build brands.” She looks for people who can create a thriving channel out of these unique points of view.

“What makes an Internet icon is someone who not only has the prowess to write and create their own content,” she says, “But you have to have a certain amount of technical skill […] and you have to have a personality.”
