Over on the Nerd HQ stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2013, Shira Lazar and Ethan Newberry caught up with Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer – the creators of the hit Adult Swim animated series, “The Venture Bros.” – about the culmination of season 5, inspiration for the series, and the legacy of “Star Wars.”
“The season finale is Sunday night at midnight,” Publick says. “We’re real super proud of this season,” Doc adds. “It felt really Venture Brother-y.”
There’s a method to the madness, though. “When you do the first season, you have no idea what you’re doing,” Doc says. “When you do the second season, you think you know what you’re doing. When you do the third season, you think you’re allowed to break it. When you do the fourth season, it’s usually pretty good. This season should be a culmination. You shouldn’t really screw that up. And we didn’t.”
The creators also tell us that they pull inspiration from many other art forms, including comics (Publick has a particular affinity for “The Fantastic Four,” punk rock music, and a Tom Swift novel.
“The comic books of our youth and the media of our youth is now the canon of our adulthood,” Doc says. He points to “Star Wars” as a prime example, categorizing it as a mythos of their culture.
“Comics, music, it’s all culture,” he adds says. “That’s kind of what our show is about. It’s not a direct parody of anything except the crap we ingested in our lives and then we cough it up in jokes.”
