I mean, you can’t expect the price of saving your life to be ONLY $1,000 when someone could be charging you $10,000 for it.

Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli is the new mustache-twirling villain of the internet after he boosted the price of a potentially life-saving drug, Daraprim, from $13.50 to $750.00. (Daraprim treats toxoplasmosis, a condition that often affects AIDS patients.)

When everyone freaked out at him – including a tweet from Hillary Clinton about price gouging – he went around calling reporters morons and tweeting a link to Eminem’s “The Way I Am” video.

We assume a PR guy somewhere gave him a stern talking to after that, because he went on Bloomberg yesterday to try to explain himself.

It’s very uncertain whether he convinced anyone – particularly since someone revealed that he allegedly once emailed an employee’s wife saying “I hope to see you and your four children homeless and will do whatever I can to assure this.”

Yikes. Do you think he can salvage his reputation after this? Or should the rotten tomato throwing continue?

    UPDATE:

Looks like Shkreli is backing down and will drop the price of Daraprim – but he won’t say by how much. He said it was in response to the public outrage, using the most passive-voice sentence I’ve seen in a while:

“Yes it is absolutely a reaction — there were mistakes made with respect to helping people understand why we took this action, I think that it makes sense to lower the price in response to the anger that was felt by people.”

No comment on the “I will make you and your kids homeless” part.
