  • It’s a familiar trope: a sleepy kitten lapping up a bowl of milk. So why not up the ante by giving your cat the best version of milk: ice cream?

I’ll tell you why: because most adult cats can’t digest lactose, the kind of sugar in dairy that gives many adult humans (including this one) an upset stomach — or worse. According to WebMD, “the most common symptom of lactose intolerance in cats is diarrhea.” Yikes.

That hasn’t stopped this trend from taking over Twitter recently. Twitter dedicated a Moments page, usually reserved for major historic events, to the trend this morning. For all the sh*t we just talked (literally), a lot of these tweets are pretty cute. Let’s look at some of them!

  • So what’s going on here? If ice cream is so bad for cats, who by the way can’t taste sweetness, why do they like it so much? Simply: they love the fat. Give a cat a bowl of fat-free ice cream (AKA “pointless frozen trash water”) and they won’t care for it. (It’ll still make them sick, though.)
