  • Rick Santorum has a Google problem. After repeatedly attacking homosexuals in his speeches, columnist Dan Savage decided to redefine Santorum’s last name so he created a website with his idea of what Santorum stood for. (We’re not going to post it here, but a quick Google search for “Rick Santorum” will give you the graphic, sexual description.) Now that Santorum is working on his 2012 campaign, however, reports are coming in that he contacted Google to help him reclaim his name.

“I suspect if something was up there like that about Joe Biden, they’d get rid of it,” Santorum said according to Politico. “If you’re a responsible business, you don’t let things like that happen in your business that have an impact on the country.”

It’s not that easy of a problem to fix though according to SearchEngineLand.com editor Danny Sullivan. Sullivan explained to Talking Points Memo that it’s not a simple Googlebomb,  where people attempt to trick Google’s algorithm to come up with the wrong link. Savage’s santorum definition is a legitimate website — and a definition that some people are actually seeking out.

Santorum would need to contact Savage directly to take down the definition. And, judging from the fact that he threatened to redefine Rick, something tells us Savage won’t be likely to acquiesce. Of course, Santorum could stop making anti-gay statements, but we doubt that’s going to happen either.

Should Google fix the Santorum problem or should the definition stay?
