Spirit Day has received almost 10,000 social mentions today as millions of people are sporting the color purple today to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth, and to take a stand against bullying. Created by Canadian teenager, Brittany McMillan, in 2010 and intended to be an annual event, Spirit Day was started to recognize the lives of young adults who have taken their own lives, as a result of harassment and ridiculing. According to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), 85 percent of LGBT teens are bullied at school on a daily basis. Luckily, it’s easy to become involved with Spirit Day and show solidarity.
