Who Dat Trends as Saints Blast Colts 62-7

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts by an NFL record making 55 points in their 62-7 victory on Sunday night.

Drew Brees tossed five touchdown passes, amassed nearly 400 yards through the air, and completed 88.5% of his passes without an interception. Most impressively, Brees remained on the mark all night, including with his incompletions–two were dropped and one was intentionally thrown away.

The Saints scored on all but two of their drives during the game. The first non-scoring drive was a one-play kneel-down to end the first half. The second was a punt in the fourth quarter.

New Orleans Head Coach Sean Payton was forced to vacate his usual sideline roaming duties due to an injury sustained in last week’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was limited to the coaches’ box perched high above the crowd. During the second half, after the Saints had secured a massive lead, upper-deck fans turned around, facing the box, and gave Payton a standing ovation.

New Orleans is considered a contender for the NFC South title, but their rivals the Atlanta Falcons–who have struggled to a 4-3 mark–are the favorites. Perhaps this display of dominance could shift beliefs. The Falcons and Saints will square off in two weeks.

From the start, the Colts displayed an inability to either defend or move the football. By the end of the First Quarter New Orleans posted 21 points while surrendering none. Fifteen minutes later the lead had ballooned to 34-0.

Sean Payton was not the only figure with a similar namesake missing from the game. Colts great, Peyton Manning, will likely miss the entire season with a neck injury. Manning’s injury was just the first in a string of disappointments for the Colts this season. Running back Joseph Addai, has had an awful season. He has notoriously battled injuries throughout his career and last night he left the game with a hamstring injury.

This morning, ESPN analyst and former NFL player Merril Hoge claimed this game has assured both Manning (due to free agency) and Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell’s departures before next season.
