Rapper Heavy D Dead at 44

  • The web is mourning the death of rap legend Heavy D whose real name is Dwight Arrington Myers, who passed away Tuesday after collapsing in his Beverly Hills home. According to the NY Daily News, he was conscious when on the phone with 911, but had difficult breathing when he was rushed in an ambulance to Cedars Sinai Medical Center at 11:25 AM. He passed away 90 minutes later.

    KTLA reports that Heavy D had just returned from a trip in Europe and was battling Pneumonia when he collapsed collapsed in an exterior hallway. Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills Police Department said, “There doesn’t appear to be any foul play. We believe it was medically related.”

  • Born in Jamaica and raised in Mount Vernon, he became known in the 90s for being the frontman for Heavy D and the Boy alongside G-Whiz, Trouble T. Roy and Eddie F. They quickly produced hits like “Now That We Found Love” and “Nuttin But Love”. Heavy D also performed the theme song for “In Living Color”.

  • More recently, he had been making his way on the big screen with films like Tower Heist starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller. Heavy D last performed at the BET awards in October.
