  • The magical mystical day is upon us, and everyone from our international neighbors to fast food restaurant chains to fictional rock stars to people we follow on Twitter are talking about it. Today is 11/11/11. People around the world are celebrating the triple double-stick threat in a variety of ways.

According to Wall Street Journal, 1,000 Chinese couples exchanged marriage vows in Malaysia because 11/11//11 is viewed as an especially “auspicious” and “romantic” date. In Las Vegas, some 3,200 wedding applications were filled out first thing this morning, starting the day with more than three times the normal amount of people ready to tie the knot in the City of Sin.

The casino industry is also cashing in on the occasion. In Atlantic City, the Trump Taj Mahal is doing drawings every 11 minutes for $1,111. And of course, restaurants are offering special deals for $11.11 meals. Case in point, at 11:11AM EST, KFC kicked off a Twitter give away of free chicken for a year to 11 winners, who are being selected once every hour for 11 hours. The Colonel even has a promoted tweet in place for the promotion.

Today is also the day fans around the globe are paying homage to Spinal Tap guitarist Nigel Tufnel. In honor of the classic character of the 1984 mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap,” played by Christopher Guest, rock journalists are paying respect to this contributor of iconic pop culture, and celebrating the man who’s amplifier went up to 11.

Here’s some Twitter conversation about the big day overall.
