  • History rears its head and repeats itself, as reports of two deaths taking place at Virgina Tech, the site of the deadliest mass shooting ever in the U.S., blaze across the Internet. Earlier today, a police officer and another individual were reportedly found dead on campus. The suspect is still unknown, and the school is currently on lockdown. Through its Twitter stream, the university is advising people, “Stay where you are.” The college also sent out an alert describing the possible shooter as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hoodie and backpack.

In 2007, the Virginia Tech massacre that shocked and horrified the country left 33 people dead, including the killer Seung-hui Cho, who took his own life after killing his victims. Campus authorities were highly criticized for not taking immediate action after the first bullets were fired in that instance. Today, social media is providing real-time communication for people potentially in harms way, as well as the public.
