Robert Griffin III Hoists Heisman

Robert Griffin III Hoists Heisman

Somewhat soothsayingly, Griffin, is seen here in a game from last season striking a somewhat similar pose to the trophy he won Saturday.

  • Size, speed, shiftiness, and slinging are all words to describe Baylor's superb quarterback Robert Griffin III. Now you can add superlative to that list of appropriate "s" words (and for all you SNL "Celebrity Jeopardy" fans out there, not "swords", these are words that begin with the letter "s"). In midtown Manhattan last night, the Heisman Trust awarded Griffin the 76th official (77th unofficial thanks to Reggie Bush's 2005 award nullification) Heisman Trophy, the honor for college football's best player.

Griffin, aka RG3, has stupefied fans all year with his striking elusiveness, leadership, and play-making abilities while making the Baylor Bears a contender, from perennial stinker of the Big 12 (or ten--er, eight...the conference that Texas bosses around--you know the one).

The announcement came on the tail end of ESPN's The Heisman Trophy Presentation--or, as I like to call it: "The Annual ESPN-unnecessarily-stretches-a-three-minute-speech-into-an-hour-long-'Thank-you-mom-dad-coaches-and-God-because-all-I-ever-wanted-to-do-was-just-play-football'-presentation."

After Griffin gave an honest and heart-felt acceptance speech, the results of national voting were announced. Stanford's Andrew Luck was second by more than 250 votes, Alabama's Trent Richardson in third by over 500, and Wisconsin's Montee Ball and LSU's Tyrann Mathieu rounded out the fourth and fifth positions. The sizable point margin can be seen as surprising, seeing as how most experts tabbed no real frontrunner heading into the presentation.

As a college football player, Griffin has seemingly risen to such a supernatural level that no wonder a signature "s" resided on his socks during the presentation.

Here is what some of you are saying about the special night...
