Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich went head to head during last night’s Republican debate in Sioux City, Iowa. Bachman criticized the former Speaker of the House for raking in $1.6 million in consulting fees after leaving Congress in 1999 for mortgage giant Freddie Mac.
“We can’t have as our nominee for the Republican Party someone who continues to stand for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae,” Bachman said. “They need to be shut down, not built up.”
Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul also argued that Gingrich’s ties to Freddie Mac should be a warning sign for conservatives. Paul used the term “government-sponsored enterprise” repeatedly, which led to Gingrich responding with, “the term government-sponsored enterprise has a very wide range of things that do a great deal of good.”
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney has seemed to have calmed down, even though he was once again challenged about his stance on social issues.
