  • Ushering in the new year are a sextet of college football bowl games on Monday including two BCS matchups: the Rose Bowl presented by Vizio and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Pitting the Oregon Ducks (Pac-12) against the Wisconsin Badgers (Big Ten), the Rose Bowl is arguably the most awaited of the six games, as the Badgers are eager to return to Pasadena and make amends for their 2011 Rose Bowl loss.

With their trademark fast-paced offense, the Ducks’ play is as flashy as their uniforms, and nowhere will this be more evident than their ‘liquid-metal’ helmets, which will be premiered at the Rose Bowl. The game is set to start at 5:00 p.m. EST.

The day’s second BCS bowl game will see the Stanford Cardinal out of the Pac-12 faceoff against the Oklahoma State Cowboys from the Big 12 in the Fiesta Bowl. This will be Andrew Luck’s final game in a Stanford uniform, as the star quarterback is projected No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Big Ten conference will showcase five teams on Monday, more than any other league. Michigan State battles SEC foes Georgia in the Outback Bowl, Nebraska takes on another SEC power in South Carolina in the Capitol One Bowl and Penn State plays Houston in the Ticket City Bowl. The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Florida Gators will meet in the Gator Bowl, an interesting matchup considering the Gators’ ex-head coach, Urban Meyer, will don scarlet and grey has he coaches the Buckeyes against his former team.

Elsewhere in the sporting world, hockey fans are all abuzz about the annual Winter Classic, the NHLs outdoor game. Played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, this year’s edition features the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers.
