  • The latest election visualization to catch our attention is from social media marketing agency Overdrive Interactive. “Election 2012 Social Media Rankings” ranks the 2012 presidential candidates based on their cumulative Facebook likes and Twitter followers.

Barack Obama who built his 2008 Presidential campaign mobilizing voters using social media got top ranks with a social score of over 36 million. On the Republican side, New Gingrich follows with just over 1 million proving the GOP have a ways to go with their online presence. However, timing obviously means a lot, with Obama having adopted these tools far earlier than any candidate and engaging on them as President for a much longer time. “The sheer scale of the President Obama’s social media marketing platform is huge and could benefit the Democrats for years to come even after the elections and his presidency,” said Overdrive Interactive’s CEO, Harry J. Gold. “The media equivalent value of this kind of social presence and communications platform is certainly in the tens of millions of dollars and in most cases cannot even be bought – it has to be earned.”
