More Than 70 Reported Dead After Soccer Riot Erupts in Egypt

  • A riot after the conclusion of a soccer game in Port Said, Egypt, has left more than 70 people dead and hundreds injured, multiple media outlets are reporting.

On Twitter, the incident quickly became a trending topic as the violence continued to unfold and people shared stories and links using the #PorstSaid. The upheaval was a result of the home side, Al-Masry, 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, considered Egypt’s best team. Stones, fireworks and bottles were hurled by spectators at opposing fans and even players, causing numerous injuries.

It appears the first person to Tweet about the mayhem was blogger @NoonArabia, who tweeted:

Since then, dozens of reputable media outlets such as Al-Jazeera AP, BBC News, CBS News and Sky News are reporting multiple deaths.

A YouTube video has also surfaced, showing hundreds of people flooding the field as the match ended. Players are seen running behind the protection of several SWAT-like officers. A graphic image of a man whose eyes appeared to have been gouged out during the violence also surfaced on Twitter, tweeted by Andy Carvin, a senior strategist at NPR.
