  • A shooting inside a high school cafeteria in Chardon, Ohio, has left one student dead and four wounded on Monday, authorities said.

While a suspect has been taken into custody and is believed to be a student. Chardon Police Chief Timothy McKenna said the suspect has not been charged, his name not released because he is a minor.

As the shooting unfolded, students inside the school began tweeting the frightening scene. Several took to the social media site to express their fears and ask others for prayers.

Several student Tweets have begun using the hashtag #RIPDanny, which appears to be the name of the slain student.

  • The students tweeting is one several examples of Twitter working as a real-time emergency broadcast system. Last year, as reports of a gunman on the Virginia Tech college campus spread on the social medium, several students began sharing their experiences as they were in lockdown.

A press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. CTM.
