Spike Lee has apologized for distributing a tweet that he believed to contain the address of George Zimmerman — the Florida resident who murdered Trayvon Martin. It turns out that the address belongs to an elderly couple who have no relation to Martin’s murderer.With roughly 250,000 Twitter followers and a loyal fanbase, Spike Lee has a lot of power to wield. He decided to use that clout to publicize the address of Martin’s killer. Instead, he accidentally ended up launching a slew of harassment upon the home of David and Elaine McClain. The McClains have a son named William George Zimmerman who briefly lived with them in the 90s.
Lee tweeted last night: “I Deeply Apologize To The McClain Family For Retweeting Their Address.It Was A Mistake.Please Leave The McClain’s In Peace.Justice In Court”
Fearful for their safety, the couple was prompted to temporarily leave home after Lee tweeted the address. Meanwhile, justice has still not been brought to Martin’s case, with George Zimmerman yet to be charged for the murder.
