Break out the champagne. The 2012 Pulitzer Prizes were announced on Monday at Columbia University in New York, awarding to the best newspaper journalism in the nation.
Among the winners were new media organizations including The Huffington Post, who earned its first Pulitzer in National Reporting for David Wood’s extensive exploration of the “physical and emotional challenges facing American soldiers.” Also winning its first Pulitzer was POLITICO, who won the Editorial Cartooning prize thanks to the work of Matt Wuerker. Other new media finalists included Tobi Tobias in the Criticism category, where he was a finalist for work published online in ArtsJournal.com
Craig F. Walker’s photo essay titled, “Welcome Home” earned him his second Pulitzer for Feature Photography in three years, but his win is made even more fascinating considering this fact:

The New York Times was the only organization to win more than one award, winning a pair of prizes for International Reporting and Explanatory Reporting.
One of the most fascinating winners this year is Sara Ganim, who at only 24 has earned her first prize after her reporting of the Penn State child molestation allegations for The Patriot-News Staff in Harrisburg, Penn. Along with other members of the newspaper, she received the Pulitzer for Local Reporting.
The hashtag #Pulitzers momentarily became a trending topic during the official announcements, and some staffers at winning newspapers and organizations posted photos of colleagues celebrating:
